Canning Season
It's that time of year... canning season. Having moved from Wenatchee more than 5 years ago, I've managed to escape the endless tasks of killing fruit flies, peeling fruit, labeling/washing bottles, and so forth. I've canned a little here and there over the past 5 years, but is has always been with groups of people, and never in my apartment size kitchen. We were getting low on our canned fruit and we were on our last container of jam (btw, thanks for the bb jam dad). So, we decided to tackle canning and jam making all by ourselves this year. Our friends gave us a box of beautiful peaches from their family's orchard of which we were very thankful for. We got lucky with the strawberries too and managed to get some great looking berries for an excellent price! Anyhow, we did have to borrow some supplies, like the caner, and we did have to consult numerous websites and relatives on proper canning practices, but in the end we were left with a years supply of peaches and strawberry jam, ready to eat and share with friends. Surprisingly, it wasn't all that hard to can in our tiny little kitchen, though a bigger stove and more counter space would have been very nice!
